Dun Laoghaire Pier has always stood out as a significant part of the history, culture and social development of Dun Laoghaire. At one time Dun Laoghaire had the largest enclosed harbour in the world. Its grandeur is still evident today as you walk down the pier towards the elegant lighthouses on each end of the pier.
The pier was built with rocks from Dalkey and you can still follow the trail that the carts took from Dalkey quarry. The pier has always being an important social hub for Dun Laoghaire. People have always walked the pier for recreation and these days walkers, joggers and cyclists can be seen dotted along the pier.
Sailing has grown in popularity over the years. I took the photograph above during the middle of a winter storm. So, all the boats that are usually in the harbour have been docked up for security in the picture. During winter the pier can become desolate if the weather is rough and this photo represents Dun Laoghaire Pier during the cold winter period.
